A Battery Management System continuously monitors individualcell voltages to detect and correct imbalances, total pack voltage and current,cell temperatures to prevent thermal runaway, state of charge (SOC) and stateof health (SOH) estimates, and fault conditions such as over-discharge,overcharge, and short circuit.
When a fault is detected, the BMS disconnects the pack fromthe load or charger to protect both the battery and the connected equipment. Agood BMS makes lithium batteries safe; a poor one (or none at all) is a serioushazard.
Passive balancing dissipates excess energy fromhigher-capacity cells as heat, bringing all cells to the same level. It'ssimple and cost-effective. Active balancing transfers energy between cellsrather than wasting it, improving efficiency — particularly valuable in largerpacks where imbalance is more significant.
Key parameters include: cell chemistry (LiFePO4 and Li-Ionhave different voltage profiles), number of cells in series, maximum continuouscurrent, peak current capability, communication interface (UART, CAN, RS485,Bluetooth), and whether you need active or passive balancing.
